VISIONS Employment & Technology Institute: Building Your Future 2007

Reader's Digest Partners for Sight Foundation Logo VISIONS 1st Annual Employment and Technology Institute: Building Your Future 2007 was made possible through a grant from the Reader's Digest Partners for Sight Foundation.

The Institute took place Wednesday, July 25 through Sunday, July 29, 2007 at VISIONS VCB, a 35 acre campus, in Rockland County, NY. It was planned by Betsy Fabricant, Director of Recreation and Residential Programs, and Dawn M. Suvino, Director of Information Services and Technology Training and Nancy D. Miller, Executive Director of VISIONS.

Highlights from this Institute were recorded so they could be shared with anyone unable to attend and for future reference by attendees.

Recordings were made by Marten Tegnestam, Director of Technical Development of eSight Careers Network with assistance from Victor Andrews.



Keynote Address: "Cornerstone to Success: Work"

Presenter: Dr. Karen Wolffe, Director, Professional Development and CareerConnect at the American Foundation for the Blind.

Dr. Wolffe discusses the importance of work in the lives of people with visual disabilities. She shares information about current employment rates and proposes ideas for how to improve those rates.

Plenary Session: Business Advisory Council

Description: This panel includes Human Resource Managers and other professionals from The Bear Stearns Companies Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co., IRS and The Home Depot, Inc.

These large companies have a proven track record of hiring individuals with disabilities at all levels (from entry to executive). Discussion will focus on diversity policies and implementation efforts, accommodations, training and support. Recruiters talk about what it is they are looking for in potential candidates, how they evaluate resumes/cover letters, what impresses them during an initial interview, and what "turns them off".

Benefits Planning

Facilitator: Amanda Slattery

Presenters: Bill Cooperman, Dominick Pratico, Aldrin Stoja, Congressional and Public Inquiries Specialist with the Social Security Administration.

Description: Many disabled people are hesitant to work because they fear the loss of their benefits, especially where health insurance is concerned. In this session, participants will learn about the many work incentive programs offered by the Social Security Administration, including ways in which the working disabled can retain health care coverage. Advocates will also describe the many supports that are available to help you navigate the complexities of the benefits system.
