Syllabus: "Online Networking as a Job Search Tool"

By: Jim Hasse

Summary:
This is an eight-week course. Here is a summary of the complete syllabus, which is available only to those individuals accepted as eLearners for the course.

Course Objective:

This online learning experience is designed to help you share, develop and practice online skills so you can find meaningful internships and jobs through personal branding and networking. To reach that objective as an eLearner, you'll be using all of the interactive tools the eSight eLearning Center has to offer -- including online portfolio resources and blogs.

Key Competencies

The following are eight key competencies, divided into four sections, that you can expect to acquire through hands-on learning in this course:

Blogging

Lesson 1. Interacting with others within a blog as a contributor and facilitator.

Lesson 2. Learning how a personal blog can complement your online portfolio.

Contacts

Lesson 3. Discovering how and when to cultivate contacts who can help you in your career development

Lesson 4. Writing for the Web environment and finding your online voice, tone and style.

Insight

Lesson 5. Rethinking disability from an employment perspective.

Lesson 6. Understanding what disability means to your career development.

Identification

Lesson 7. Using an online environment to establish your personal brand, given your stage in life, your disability, employment trends and your goals.

Lesson 8. Developing an Online Presence

Expected Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you will have developed a framework (most notably in such tangibles as a completed offering statement, JIST Card and ePortfolio) for launching your own online networking initiative as a tool for finding a job. You'll show:

  • Evidence of familiarity with blogging as a blog contributor and facilitator;

  • Use of online networking to generate contacts through company research, job marketing and focused blogging;

  • Development of personal insight into disability employment issues;

  • Identification of potential paths to meaningful careers in spite of disability issues; and

  • Skills in development of a coordinated online presence as a job seeker.

The more you interact online, make networking a habit, gain insight into practical employment job-seeking strategies, establish a career focus and achieve visibility the quicker you'll find meaningful work.
