This eSight Phone Conference took place on June 29, 2004.

Guest Expert: Bill Coplin, Ph.D.

Bill Coplin, Ph.D., is author of "10 Things Employers Want You to Learn in College" (Ten speed Press, 2003), which not only explains in detail the skills students need to learn during college but also provides them with the tools for assessing and tracking the development of those skills.

For more than 30 years, Dr. Coplin, director and professor of the public affairs program at Syracuse University, has been an advocate and practitioner of a skill-based liberal arts curricula.

In so doing, he has helped thousands of college students get great jobs by showing them how to acquire marketable job skills before they graduate.

Dr. Coplin has published more than 50 books and articles in the fields of international relations, public policy analysis, political risk analysis and social science education.

In his book, "10 Things Employers Want You to Learn in College," he goes beyond test scores and grade point averages and shows how to develop real-world know-how in these 10 crucial skill groups:

  1. Work Ethic
  2. Physical Performance
  3. Speaking
  4. Writing
  5. Teamwork
  6. Influencing People
  7. Research
  8. Number Crunching
  9. Critical Thinking
  10. Problem Solving

In a conversation with eSight's Nan Hawthorne, Dr. Coplin, illustrates these 10 know-how groups by giving examples of each. His examples result in a total of 38 specific sets of skills students -- with and without disabilities -- can pick up during college and showcase to employers upon graduation.

He also wishes to share with you, as an eSight member, some key worksheets for tracking and developing these 38 skills sets. They are for your private use only. Note the copyright: Copyright ᅡᄅ 2003 Ten Speed Press. All rights reserved.
